News about stories

My short story 'Earth Hour' is now available to read at Tor.com. And my short story 'Sidewinders', in The Mammoth Book of Alternate Histories has been nominated for the Sidewise Award for Alternate History.

Both of these stories can be seen as 'pilot episodes' for novels that I may write in the future (and that, in some other present, I already have).

Congratulations on the nomination. I haven't read 'Sidewinders' yet, but I will should the anthology fall into my hands.

Off to read 'Earth Hour'.

Wow, congratulations! :)

Is the post-Spartacus world in "Sidewinders" the same as the "real" world in the "Restoration Game?" And, I'd like to see a novel in the GBR world.

If it's not the same world it's fairly close to it. I don't know if I could set a whole novel in the GBR world, but I had thought of expanding 'Sidewinders' into a novel. Unfortunately that was around about the time Iain Banks's Transition came out, and while mine would have been a very different novel it would have had a very general similarity - searching for the truth behind all the interventions on alternate Earths - so I've put it on the back burner.

A possible title I've fancied since I read it decades ago in M. John Harrison's 'To the Stars and Beyond on the Fabulous Anti-syntax Drive':

'That potboiler (Whip Queens of the Lash Planet - They sought the needle of eternal youth in the haystack of alternate timestreams!) you plotted in the bathtub yesterday ...'

Re "Earth Hour" -- the last three paragraphs on page 1 were were especially fun.

Nice to know someone shares my dark sense of humour!

Mr. MacLeod - Sidewinders was my favorite story in The Mammoth Book of Alternate Histories. Am now questioning my reality every time I misplace my house keys. thanks for the entertaining read, Sir.

Rick, thanks - that comment's made my day!
